Understanding Your Property’s Water Valve
A valve helps regulate, control, and direct how water flows in your pipes. Plumbers and homeowners can use them to isolate various sections of your plumber. This means you can turn off sections that need repairs.
Pressure Release Valve
A pressure release valve protects your plumbing from high pressure that could cause a hot water tank to explode. When the pressure builds up, the valve opens and releases hot steam. You’ll most often find these on water heaters, but industrial properties may have more of them.
Pressure valves look like a T on its side and you may see an exposed spring near the top. You’ll also notice a small screw or handle coming from the top, which opens to release the pressure.
Faucet Valve
These valves help control the flow of water in sinks, showers, and tubs. You can usually find it a short distance from the bottom of your faucet. The three most common types of faucet valves include:
- Ball valve: These valves contain a hollow ball that works by rotating to control the flow of water. They provide exceptional speed and durability, making them the most common shut-off valve for residential homes.
- Globe valve: Globe valves can throttle your water flow rather than simply toggle it on and off. They can also make real-time adjustments to water flow, making them great for industrial applications.
- Cartridge valve: You’ll find these valves in showers. They rotate to control the flow and pressure of the water according to your preferences.
Gate Valve
You’ll instantly recognize this valve by the wheel-like handle. As one of the most common types of water valves, it usually acts as the main shut-off point for the water entering your home. You’ll find it in your basement or on your exterior wall on the main water line.
Check Valve
This valve prevents water from flowing in two directions. You’ll find them most commonly in wastewater pipes to prevent sewage from flowing back into your home. You can identify them by the bulge or small outcropping they form on your pipe.
Butterfly Valve
These valves throttle water using a rotating disc, though less effectively than a globe valve. They require a lower investment than globe valves, which is why some homeowners prefer them.
Needle Valve
These valves provide the most complete control over the water flowing through your home. It uses a screw-like device to provide nuanced control. You can locate it by finding a corkscrew-like handle on your pipe.
