If you depend on a sump pump to keep your basement from flooding, it’s important to have a backup sump pump system in place, just like it’s important to back up the hard drive on your computer. The most reliable sump pump available in the industry is still a mechanical device and can fail. A backup sump pump system greatly reduces the chance of flooding, but it's one of those things that most people don’t think about until it’s too late.

Two of the most common backup options available are:

water powered backup sump pumpWater-Powered Backup

Water-powered sump pumps are powered by the municipal water pressure coming in to your home. The nice thing about this sump pump backup option is that you don’t have to worry about keeping a battery charged all the time, and if you have an extended power outage, you won’t have to worry about the pump failing.

The downside is that you can only use a water-powered backup sump pump if you have access to a municipal water supply. There is a cost involved also. When in operation, this type of pump will use one gallon of city water for every two gallons pumped out of your sump pit. You will be billed for this water usage.

We suggest paying for an alarm on your backup sump pump system that will sound when the pump is running.

Battery backups are the most common type of backup sump pump option. They consist of a battery, about the size and shape of a car battery, as well as a secondary sump pump that is mounted above the primary pump. The battery backup will run three to six hours non-stop if fully charged.

The downside of battery-powered systems is the maintenance required. You must test the battery to make sure it's charged and ready for operation frequently and replace the battery as recommended by the manufacturer (usually every three to five years).
